Safety In The Community

Community safety and awareness is important because everyone spends time outside shopping, attending appointments, walking outdoors, and participating in social activities. Safe communities support healthy aging, independence, and awareness. Pedestrian safety is especially important for seniors. Slower walking speed and reduced reaction time can increase the risk of traffic injuries. Everyone should use crosswalks, obey traffic signals, and wear reflective clothing when walking at night. Public transportation safety also matters, everyone should wait in well-lit areas and keep personal belongings secure. Carrying some sort of emergency contact information for a ride service, or a family member would help in dangerous scenarios.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drivers over the age of 70 face higher crash death rates because older adults are more vulnerable to injuries in collisions. In busy regions, heavy rain, traffic congestion, and complex intersections can make driving even more challenging. We encourage older adults to take defensive driving and collision prevention courses to improve road safety. Acknowledging community members also play an important role in safety, by recognizing signs such as slower reaction times, poor vision, and other factors that impact safe driving. Many seniors can continue driving safely by limiting nighttime driving, avoiding rush hour traffic, and maintaining regular medical checkups. Public transportation systems like SoundTransit and community ride services also provide helpful alternatives when driving can become unsafe. Promoting safe driving habits among older drivers helps protect both and everyone sharing the roads in the area.
